Kindness often begins with curiosity. When we take a moment to ask, listen, and understand, we open the door to connection — and sometimes, the most powerful lessons come from children.

Becky’s Story

At the Grand Plaza, Becky noticed a little boy, about six years old, shopping with his mum. He looked her way, smiling shyly. Becky waved, and that simple act of kindness gave him the confidence to approach.

With childlike honesty, he asked why Becky was in a wheelchair. Becky replied gently,"It’s because I can’t walk as much and I don’t have as much strength in my arms, back, body, and legs. I live with pain every day, all day."

The boy thought for a moment, then asked: “Can you walk a little bit?” Becky smiled and said, “Yes, sometimes on my good days I can. ”His eyes lit up: “Cool! Can you walk now?” Becky answered, “Sorry, not today.”

Without hesitation, the boy grinned and said: “You’re awesome.”

Then, turning to his mum, he announced with excitement, “Can I have a wheelchair? Her car is cool! It even has a camera, a horn, and lights. My legs get tired too.”

His mum chuckled and reminded him that his legs worked perfectly fine, but what stood out most was the boy’s openness, kindness, and admiration.

Curiosity Leads to Understanding

This small moment shows how natural curiosity can become a bridge to kindness. The little boy didn’t see limits — he saw possibility, cool features, and someone worth admiring. His questions weren’t judgmental; they were an attempt to understand. And his response — “You’re awesome” — carried more kindness than many grown-up conversations ever do.

The Lesson for World Kindness Day

Kindness doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be as simple as waving back, answering questions with patience, or reminding someone they’re awesome. When we meet curiosity with openness, we create opportunities for understanding and compassion.

This World Kindness Day, may we all learn from the honesty of children:

  • Be curious.

  • Ask gently.

  • Listen deeply.

  • And always choose kindness in the way we respond.

Because sometimes, the most ordinary conversations leave the most extraordinary impact.
